The rarest of the Campania whites in the Alois portfolio is the palagrello bianco, here known as Caiatì, Casertan as “u pallarell,” or “small ball,” recalling the grape’s tiny, round shape. Quietly volcanic and sharply limestone from 900m on land friable with clay on the Caiatini Mountains. The vintage was not an easy one, especially in the first few months around bud break and through early leafing. Better over the back side through harvest and so compliant, tractable and easy-drinking, like this Caiatì, for the first few years. Pure pleasure is a good thing. Drink 2020-2023. Tasted March 2020.
