Pontelatone, Campania
Red wine from Italy
Drinking window: 2023 - 2026
Balsam herbs, camphor and a hint of smoke give way to crushed blackberries as the 2018 Casavecchia Trifolium blossoms in the glass. It’s soft and enveloping with a juicy acidity that helps enliven its mineral-tinged red and black fruits. This leaves a bitter twang while finishing lightly structured and with a chewy quality as violet inner florals slowly taper off. This is a worthy effort from a challenging year. Ultimately, I find myself craving more depth on the palate.

For readers looking to explore off the beaten path, Alois produces several bottlings of Casavecchia, Pallagrello Nero and Pallagrello Bianco that are all worth seeking out. Moreover, Michele Alois provides in-depth details of soil, elevation, vine training, yields and élevage on the back of each bottle. All of the reds are refined in large wooden vats with similar days of maceration, allowing for a more reliable study of terroir and vintage.
