An IGT wine, the 2011 Pallagrello Nero Cunto is a pure expression of one of the trendiest indigenous grapes to emerge from Campania in recent years. Cunto sees grapes harvested from the Pontelatone subzone south of Caserta with southeast exposures and volcanic soils. Fruit comes off the vines in October and is processed in stainless steel followed by an 18-month aging period in oak casks. The bouquet displays sweet tones of chocolate and cherry fruit with oak-driven layers of cinnamon and Spanish cedar at the back. The mid-palate shows earthy sensations and some grilled herbs. There isn't enormous depth here and the wine is moderate in length. But fresh acidity adds focus and brightness.
